University of the Aegean

The University of the Aegean (UAegean) is one of Greece’s prominent public higher education and research institutions, making a significant contribution to education, scientific research, and regional development. Established in 1984 and headquartered in Mytilene, the University is distinguished by its unique multi-island structure, with academic and research activities distributed across six Aegean islands: Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Syros, and Lemnos. Comprising six Schools and eighteen Departments, the University offers a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, contributing substantially to the generation and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

With interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and international engagement at the core of its mission, the University of the Aegean conducts extensive research across a wide range of scientific disciplines, including environmental sciences, marine sciences, geography, food science and nutrition, information and communication technologies, engineering, management, and social sciences. Through modern research laboratories, participation in national and European research programmes, and collaboration with academic and industry partners, the University promotes the development of innovative technologies and methodologies that address contemporary societal, economic, and environmental challenges.

Particular emphasis is placed on the sustainable development of island regions, environmental protection, the management of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and the responsible utilization of natural resources. The University’s geographical distribution creates unique opportunities to investigate and address challenges associated with island development, climate change, biodiversity, food security, and sustainable production. At the same time, connecting academic research with the needs of local communities and regional economies supports the development of evidence-based solutions with significant environmental and societal impact.

In the agri-food sector, the University of the Aegean conducts scientific activities related to food quality and safety, nutrition, the utilization of marine biological resources, and the sustainable management of production systems. Interdisciplinary collaboration across different research fields creates opportunities for developing innovative products and processes, enhancing the added value of local products, and facilitating the transition towards more sustainable agri-food models.

The University’s participation in the Flagship Initiative for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems (Sus.Agri.Food) aligns with this strategic direction, strengthening collaboration among universities, research centres, and industry stakeholders. Through its involvement, the University contributes to the generation and utilization of scientific knowledge, the development of innovative approaches to sustainable food production, and the promotion of the nutritional and economic value of Greek agri-food and marine products.

With a continued commitment to academic excellence, research, and innovation, the University of the Aegean remains an important contributor to scientific, technological, and regional development, supporting the resilience of local communities and advancing a sustainable future for Greece and the wider Mediterranean region.
