Mountain Tea

Mountain tea, also known as Sideritis, is an aromatic plant that grows in the mountainous regions of Greece, including Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Since antiquity, it has been used as a beverage for its beneficial properties.
Mountain tea has potential pharmacological properties. it is a source of flavonoids and polyphenols, substances with strong antioxidant activity that protect cells from oxidative damage. Furthermore, it may possess anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to the reduction of inflammation in the body. Traditionally, it is used to strengthen the immune system and relieve cold symptoms, thanks to its expectorant action. It also promotes the proper functioning of the digestive system, helping to alleviate indigestion and bloating.
In Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the species of mountain tea (Sideritis) cultivated is Sideritis scardica, also known as Mount Olympus tea. This species is endemic to the area and thrives at high altitudes, where the climatic conditions are ideal for its growth. Sideritis scardica is a perennial herb with an erect or branched stem, lance-shaped leaves with white fuzz, and yellow flowers. Its essential oil shows a high concentration of β-pinene, carvacrol, and α-pinene.
Furthermore, the species Sideritis raeseri, known as Parnassos tea, is also cultivated in the wider region. It is also a perennial herb with a thin stem and lance-shaped leaves. This species is known for its rich flavor and aroma, making it popular among consumers.
