The Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DEMETER (ELGO–DIMITRA) is one of Greece’s leading public organizations in agricultural research, innovation, vocational education, and the certification of agricultural products and food. With a primary mission to modernize and develop the Greek agricultural sector, the Organization contributes to improving production processes, strengthening the competitiveness of Greek agri-food production, and ensuring the quality and authenticity of agricultural products. Furthermore, it provides scientific and technical support to the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food in the formulation and implementation of policies related to agricultural development and the sustainable management of production resources.
With applied agricultural research, knowledge transfer, and the connection of scientific expertise with agricultural production at the core of its mission, ELGO–DIMITRA conducts extensive activities across a broad range of scientific disciplines, including crop and livestock production, genetic improvement, biotechnology, food science and technology, environmental protection, and natural resource management. Through its General Directorate of Agricultural Research and eleven research institutes, the Organization promotes the development of innovative technologies, the practical application of research findings, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge to farmers, businesses, and stakeholders throughout the agri-food value chain.
Particular emphasis is placed on the preservation and utilization of Greek genetic resources, the conservation of agricultural biodiversity, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices. The Organization supports the development of production systems capable of addressing contemporary challenges related to climate change, food security, and the efficient management of natural resources. Through applied research and collaboration with universities, research centres, businesses, and agricultural stakeholders, ELGO–DIMITRA contributes to the development of evidence-based solutions that enhance the productivity, resilience, and sustainability of Greek agriculture.
At the same time, ELGO–DIMITRA plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality, traceability, and identity of Greek agricultural products. Through its responsibilities for the inspection and certification of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products, as well as the implementation of good agricultural practices, the Organization contributes to consumer protection and enhances the added value of Greek products. In addition, through agricultural vocational education and training programmes, it supports skills development and the dissemination of modern production methods among agricultural professionals and rural communities.
The Organization’s participation in the Flagship Initiative for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems (Sus.Agri.Food) aligns with its strategic commitment to advancing applied research, innovation, and sustainable agricultural development. Through its involvement, ELGO–DIMITRA contributes to strengthening collaboration among academic and research institutions, generating and utilizing scientific knowledge, and developing innovative approaches that enhance the sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience of Greek agri-food systems. Particular emphasis is placed on connecting scientific research with the practical needs of agricultural production and translating research outcomes into tangible benefits for producers, businesses, and the Greek economy.
With a continued commitment to scientific excellence, technological innovation, quality assurance, and knowledge transfer, ELGO–DIMITRA remains a key contributor to the development of the Greek agri-food sector. Through its research, educational, and certification activities, the Organization supports the protection of Greek agricultural production, promotes the quality and distinctive characteristics of domestic products, and contributes to establishing a more sustainable and competitive agri-food system.
